Next Interactives, headquartered right here in Ithaca, has been working relentlessly on building [ithaca Forward]'s new website. The time has come to launch this new site. [iF] and Next have spent almost half a year researching, testing, surveying and listening in the hopes to create a website that will help you become more engaged in our community.

If you have any comments, ideas or suggestions, please let us know at ithacaforward@gmail.com. If you have signed up previously on the Blog, you will need to re-register on the new site to receive emails. If you are not our list, we encourage you to sign up so that you can receive up to the minute updates and special offers.

Anastasia C. Ben-Gurion, a member of the Association of Image Consultants International, has been a practicing Image Consultant since 1992 for both individuals and groups. She has an extensive background in fashion design and marketing, both in the United States and in international markets, and works as a consultant in the fashion industry. She also teaches at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she studied Design and Image Consulting. Science Cabaret! Twist and Sprout: Revealing plant awareness

As a group, plants are among the slowest forms of life. With their barely
perceptible movements, plants merit little notice for most humans. With
industrialized agriculture, increasing urbanization, the availability of
realistic-looking artificial plants that do not require human interaction,
and a world that is moving at an ever-increasing pace, we are becoming
further removed from the rhythms of plants. As a consequence, plants are
receding in our consciousness and tend to be regarded as little more than
ornamental objects.

Dr. Hangarter has used time-lapse technology to translate the timescale of
plants into one more familiar to us, allowing us to witness how keenly
aware plants are of their environment throughout their life as they
respond to various stimuli. The sense of the intrigue and mystery
time-lapse imaging reveals also enhances our own awareness of plant life
and provides an opportunity to reflect on our relationship to plants and
our environment.

About Science Cabaret: Ithaca's Science Cabaret was inspired by the Café
Scientifique movement ( http://www.cafescientifique.org/), which started in
Europe in the late 1990s and has spread rapidly. Cafes Scientifiques
promote public engagement with science by eschewing a lecture format in
favor of informal talks on topics of broad interest, which are used as a
jumping-off point for group discussion. Sessions usually take place once
a month in social venues such as cafes or pubs.

Many think this will be a healthy and much-needed addition to the downtown atmosphere. Research currently being conducted is showing the possibility that extending the hours of operation will curb most of the unwanted noise in our neighborhoods that are caused by after-hours parties that happen in lieu of these extended hours of operation. County estimates have the extra tax revenue raised to be between $100,000-$200,000 per year.

Ithaca Children's Garden in need of Board Members

Ithaca Children’s Garden is a small not-for-profit organization with a public children’s garden. We are currently in the process of developing the 3-acre site in Cass Park with funding from grants and private donations. Phase I, completed in 2006, resulted in the building of Gaia, the large cement turtle sculpture that is prominent as you drive past Cass Park on Route 89. Our educational programs on-site and at schools have now reached hundreds of children in the Ithaca area since 2000.

It is time for the organization to grow and stretch! We plan to increase the number of board members and develop a more diverse governing body so that the new board can move ahead with strategic planning, site development, fundraising, and the appointment of a new executive director in 2007.

Thanks to the generosity of NeighborWorks® America which donated many of its furnishings to Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services after moving its district office from Ithaca to New York City, INHS has surplus office furniture. On Tuesday, September 26 from noon to 4:00 pm, INHS will hold a tent sale of numerous items ranging from desks and computer tables to file cabinets and office chairs. Prices will range from $10 to $40.

Providing opportunities for developing and enhancing leadership skills.

SCOPED, Schuyler County Chamber of Commerce, and Corning Community College are seeking program candidates who live or work in Schuyler County and are interested in developing their skills and knowledge of community issues, as well as in pursuing leadership roles in their community and career. Candidates must complete an application form and provide two reference forms to be reviewed by the Leadership Schuyler Advisory Committee. A maximum of twenty-five individuals, representing a cross-section of the community will be selected to participate in the program. Leadership Schuyler begins with a mandatory full-day orientation session. The remainder of the program will include 13 two-and one-half hour sessions and a commencement ceremony. To graduate from Leadership Schuyler, the participant must attend at least11 full sessions of the 13 offered, along with the mandatory orientation. Tuition is $400 before September 1st and $425 after September 1st for Schuyler County residents or anyone employed in Schuyler County. The fee covers the cost of tuition, materials, supplies, meals and refreshments. This fee may be paid by the participant, sponsoring businessor a combination of the two. Leadership Schuyler begins its sixth year this fall.

Congrats [iF]...you raised well over $1,000 for our 2006 Relay For Life Team. This is incredible considering it was our first year participating in the event. Thank you to all who stayed up all night, participated and especially donated to this cause. You all made it such a success for everyone.

For those of us that walked that night, I don't think that any of us will ever forget the teary eyed moments during the luminary. I still get chills thinking about it.

JUNE 13, 2006, The NY Times-
Upstate New York is staggering from an accelerating exodus of young adults, new census results show. The migration is turning many communities grayer, threatening the long-term viability of ailing cities and raising concerns about the state's future tax base.

From 1990 to 2004, the number of 25-to-34-year-old residents in the 52 counties north of Rockland and Putnam declined by more than 25 percent. In 13 counties that include cities like Buffalo, Syracuse and Binghamton, the population of young adults fell by more than 30 percent. In Tioga County, part of Appalachia in New York's Southern Tier, 42 percent fewer young adults were counted in 2004 than in 1990.

"Make no mistake: this is not business as usual," Robert G. Wilmers, the chairman of M & T Bank in Buffalo, told his shareholders this spring. "The magnitude and duration of population loss among the young is unprecedented in our history. There has never been a previous 10-year period in the history of the upstate region when there has been any decline in this most vital portion of our population."

Leadership Tompkins Applicants Wanted

Leadership Tompkins is recruiting participants for its class of 2006-07.

Leadership Tompkins--a program co-sponsored by the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce and Tompkins Cortland Community College--assembles a diverse group of individuals from business, industry, education, non-profit, and government organizations who wish to develop their leadership skills and have a passion for community involvement. The program educates participants about the resources of Tompkins County and the complexity of community service dynamics.

The program is highly experiential and promotes networking among participants, alumni, and community leaders. The $800 tuition, which may be paid by the participant, business or organization (or a combination thereof), covers all costs including the 2-day kick-off Retreat, 16 instructional sessions, tours, events, lunches and a Graduation dinner celebration. A limited number of partial scholarships are available based on financial need.

In addition to educational sessions, the participants form groups around areas of community need and personal passion and complete Community Action Projects. This year we will be soliciting RFPs from community organizations (information to follow under separate cover) to insure that the Projects are meeting the greatest need, are supportable, and are able to be completed within the timeframe of the program.

VIP Packages available to [iF] members

V-I-P packages for the Ithaca Community Fireworks Show on Monday, July 3, are now available - anyone in [iF] is eligible to become a Very Important Patron of the fireworks. The V-I-P area, atop Ithaca College’s South Hill campus, provides an “up-close and personal” view of the fireworks show, an all-you-can-eat barbecue buffet beginning at 7:00 p.m., plus entertainment.

There will be two special performances on stage in the V-I-P area this year. Former members of “Sons of Pitches” have teamed up to form “The Fault Line,” providing a new vocal sound “filled with harmonies and dedicated to having you fall in love all over again.” The Ithaca premiere for “The Fault Line” will be July 3 at the fireworks V-I-P area. And returning for another year will be Aaron Kelly, the young country-and-western singing sensation.

In addition to “The Fault Line” and Aaron Kelly, there will be clowns, magicians, face painting, and games for children throughout the evening. Chris Allinger of Q-Country 103.7 (WQNY-FM) and Jim Lee of Lite Rock 97.3 (WYXL-FM) will be hosts at the V-I-P area.

Elsewhere on campus, tethered hot-air balloon rides will be available, thanks to RE/Max Associates Real Estate, beginning about 6:30 p.m., weather permitting. And, Car Pride of Ithaca will have a display of vintage automobiles, also starting at 6:30. These two attractions are free to the public. The fireworks show, produced by American Fireworks Company of Utica and Ithaca, begins at about 9:45 p.m.

The V-I-P package, which costs only $135 for a family of five, also includes a special pass for parking, an after-glow party, and a special exit route following the fireworks.

In 1994, a “white paper” by the New York State Economic Development Council (NYSEDC) played a major role in shaping the economic development policies for then Governor-elect George Pataki. Once again, NYSEDC wants to put forward policy suggestions that are formulated by the best thinking in the State and reflect the concerns and priorities of opinion leaders throughout New York. Bob Dylan Themed Benefit Concert Scheduled for Friday May, 19th at Castaways

In celebration of Bob Dylan’s 65th Birthday, The Tompkins Chamber has organized a special tribute concert at Castaways on Friday, May 19th. All proceeds from this event will benefit Phase 2 of The Cayuga Waterfront Trail. Phase One has already been completed and is enjoyed by hundreds of people each day. Please help us reach our $200,000 goal in Community Contributions for Phase 2 of the Trail.

Performers include: Greg Graffin, Hubcap, Johnny Dowd, Mary Lorson, The Splendors, The Don Bazely Project, Mortal Combine, Steve Gollnick, Joe Crookston, Mike Ellis, Larry Stamatel and Matthew Vendryes.

Each performer will be given the opportunity to play 3-4 Bob Dylan songs of their choice, and no song will be repeated all night long! The cost to attend is $10 in advance or $12 day of the show. [iF] Invited to join the Dragon Boat Crews!

The Ithaca Asian American Association, IAAA, runs the Dragon Boat Program in town and we invite members of the Ithaca Forward to come out and try Dragon Boating.

We meet at the Cass Park Dock behind the swimming pool. We're out on the water 3 times per week from May-October.
Monday and Wednesday, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Saturday, 10-12:00 p.m.

In Dragon Boat racing, teams of 22 crew members compete 250, 500, and 1000 meter races on a 42 foot canoe at 60-70 strokes per minute. With sprint races lasting from 1 minute to 5 minutes, dragon boating provides opportunity to get fit and stay fit. At the same time, it promotes teamwork and friendship.

We're proud to host the inaugural Finger lakes International Dragon Boat Festival on July, 15, 2006. You can learn more about it at www.ithacadragonboat.org. Organize a team to compete, come and watch the festivity, or help make the festival a success by volunteering.

MS Walk Needs Volunteers

Looking for a great way to enjoy the great weather and support a good cause? This Sunday, May 7th, Ithaca is hosting the MS Walk - and is in need of volunteers for the event.

Volunteers would assist with serving meals, cheer participants on along the walk, assist with directions, and help set-up/clean up. To register as a volunteer for this event, click HERE.

The event runs from 9am to 3pm, at the Ithaca High School, and needs volunteers for some or all of that time period.

The Tompkins County Relay for Life is more than just a fundraising event; it also raises awareness about the American Cancer Society's programs and services and is a Celebration of Life for Cancer Survivors and anyone who has been touched by the disease.

The Relay for Life will be held at the Lansing High School Track on July 15-16 (Fri-Sat) and the event starts at 6pm with the kick-off first lap honoring our community's survivors.
